Silver and Time by Merle King, ticks all The Resident’s boxes and not just for readability, mystery, plotting and characterisation. We identify easily with protagonist Kate, who moves in a setting we all inhabit.
Although Silver and Time offers this reassurance, in an almost imperceptible way, Merle draws us into a less secure time and place: the turbulent setting of a Converso family in medieval Cordoba.
When teacher Kate impulsively moves to the Costa del Sol, her everyday world is rocked by terrifying nightmares and inexplicable time-slip episodes. Gradually, the past begins to take her over.
Soon Kate cannot distinguish between present day reality and a 15th century tragedy of love, betrayal and religious persecution. Only a harrowing question remains: can Kate find her way out of the nightmare before her alter ego Ana takes over completely.
But the intriguing story and its easy readability ticked only two of our boxes. We’re The Resident by name and resident by nature, so it was other aspects of Merle King’s book that finally did the job. It was significant for us that the author lives in Estepona and the story is set in Estepona and Cordoba. And that the haunting cover was designed by a graphic artist from Bahia Dorada. Oh yes, and the two mysterious women on the cover are from Estepona, pictured by a photographer from Nuevo Andalucia. And the launch of the title was held at Glitterati in Benavista.
It has also now been chosen as ‘book of the month’ by the Estepona Reading Group in April. And to cap it all, as part of International Women’s Day, Merle King is to be honoured in Estepona with a presentation, talk and signing at Centro Cultural Padre Manuel. Be there on March 10th at 8 pm if you want to meet Merle.
